Description

Ogel PLAY SLUM is a fictional toy that proposes slums, shanty towns and favelas as construction toys appropriate to today's world. Given that the number of people living in slums is the same as the population of Europe, PLAY SLUM simply recognises slums as a dominant form of human dwelling. Modelled on Lego's City range, which proposes a generic city, Ogel proposes a generic slum. But, of course, the notion of a 'generic slum' is rather more problematic than a 'generic city'.The Lego city is a planned city. Its houses, shops and police stations are products of bureaucratic welfarist democracies. Slums, emerging from the needs of poor people adapting to particular circumstances, have no logic of transcendence to them. The pure immanence of the slum is what makes them attractive to the discourses of urbanists and architects looking for organic models of building, and to activists looking for an emergent order based in the agency of the poor.
