Description

This book - Palimpsest - was first published twenty years ago; it grew from an enduring pleasure in using maps, in searching out and surveying buildings in the Irish countryside. Travelling around Ireland at that time, everything - houses, churches, barns, walls, the form of small landlord towns - seemed to offer lessons in the essential, in siting and environmental intelligence in the ability to negotiateformal geometrics with limited means. In Ireland, beautiful things have light imprints; they are always on the cusp, and - when neglected - vanish quickly; there is no reserve. As a book, Palimpsest came from this context, from a natural sympathy with history and old buildings, from a regard for their strange and slightly impenetrable nature, for materials layered in a deep patina of age.
