Description

The construction process, right through from planning and design to use and demolition, has a major impact on society. Initially concern was focused on its environmental impact and the quest for sustainability, but this has now extended into the wider remit of corporate social responsiblity (CSR). This involves businesses acknowledging the expectations of society and acting on behalf of all stakeholders. It essentially means that businesses must act (voluntarily) in a socially ethical manner by developing policy that encompasses the core principles enshrined by CSR. Unlike several other EU countires (notably France, Denmark and the Netherlands), the UK has yet to pass laws requiring firms to report on social and environmental issues. Yet some firms in the UK have grasped the challenge.

This textbook examines the impact of the construction industry on society and incorporates expert contributions on subjects including government intervention, human and employee rights, community involvement, corruption within the procurement process, and environmental damage. It is argumentative in nature and exposes competing views that seek to justify support for or ignorance of CSR principles.
